Bottom Line: Good for a quick trip of highlights, but not for a full-blown tour of the region. There are a few huge omissions that some will find unforgivable.Details:This ebook is a chapter from Blue Guide's Northern Italy, so I was expecting it to be more of a resource for highlights than a fully fleshed out tour of Emilia-Romagna, and it is. Thus, it has some shortcomings, but it also has good information for those who are not spending a great deal of time in the region. If you are intending to take a mere, quick jaunt through the region, I can tell you that you will be sorry that you didn't choose to spend more time in this region, which is one of Italy's great ones.In spite of its brevity, this book manages to give recommendations for both sites and restaurants. Since Emilia-Romagna is the center of Italy's food world, having a list of good restaurants is key. The restaurants, food shops and markets in this book were identical to those that friends who live and grew up here took us to. The same was true for many of the museums and sights. So I felt that that held true in the places we visited without our local friends.The information about the duomos, basilicas and churches in each of the cities and towns is very good, as is the truncated but still interesting information about the stunning Farnese theater in Parma's Pilotta.The art is covered fairly well. Parmigianino, of course, has a large sidebar but there is only a mere mention of a stunning drawing by Leonardo in the Pilotta.Among the things that were lacking: info about tours to Parmigiano-Reggiano cheesemakers and balsamic vinegar makers. The former, in particular, is an unforgettable experience, but both are key to the region.The Modena chapter makes almost no mention of two stellar native sons, both of which are pretty serious omissions, imo: Opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti and chef Massimo Bottura. Pavarotti was, and still is, one of the most famous names in opera - an art form that was impacted by several notables from this region (Verdi gets coverage in Busseto chapter).There is nothing at all in the guide about Massimo Bottura, the chef who has seriously put Modena on as many culinary maps as balsamic vinegar has. Nor is it mentioned that he played an important role in helping to save the Parmigiano-Reggiano cheesemakers from ruin after the 2012 earthquake. Nor is it mentioned that his restaurant, Osteria Francescana (listed simply as Francescana in the Modena restaurant section), has consistently been at or on the very top of several "world's best restaurants" lists.There are no pictures, but the maps are fairly good.The layout of the ebook is odd - the Table of Contents is at the back, behind all of the maps.
